Tye DeGrange: History
CEO & Founder, Round Barn Labs

Tye DeGrange is the CEO of Round Barn Labs, a growth marketing consulting firm based in San Francisco. Born in Santa Rosa, CA on a working ranch, Tye was raised to be a cowboy but ended up in Digital Marketing. He has over 12 years of data driven acquisition and retention marketing experience growing startups and fortune 500 companies in the consumer and enterprise space. He has worked at companies like eBay and startups backed by VC firms like Sequoia Capital and Kleiner Perkins. Tired of marketing agencies incentivized to spend media dollars or only manage one digital channel, Tye launched a growth marketing firm serving over forty clients in 2.5 years.



Markell Morris: Sociology
Owner, Futures In Motion, Inc.

Markell Morris is an experienced career counselor, teacher and trainer who helps frustrated job seekers find career direction. She is the author of Fast Track Your Career: Three Steps for Finding Work You Love and has developed two signature programs for job seekers and career changers. Markell works with clients from entry-level through mid-career in industries such as higher education, consumer products, technology and software development, hospitality, life sciences and non-profit. In her role as a career counselor and faculty, Markell guides her clients in discovering career options that integrate their interests, skills, and passions. She is an associate faculty member at Santa Monica College Transfer/Counseling Center and El Camino College. Markell received her Master’s degree in Counseling from the University of San Diego, and her Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology from the University of California, Santa Barbara. She is a president-elect of the California Career Development Association and Volunteer at New Hope Grief Support Community.

Cathy Segovia: Communication
Talent Acquisition Manager, Enterprise

Thirteen years ago, straight out of UCSB, Cathy Segovia started her career as a Management Trainee with Enterprise Rent-a-Car. She worked hard and was promoted to a Branch Manager within two years of being with the company. As a manager, she trained and developed many employees while running a profitable, million dollar business. In 2009, Cathy was promoted into Talent Acquisition. As a Talent Acquisition Manager, Cathy helps determine her Region’s hiring needs for quality external candidates while implementing a 12 month marketing plan. She also manages the interview process and evaluates the regional hiring process to insure the most qualified candidates are hired. Cathy enjoys working with student organizations, professors, athletics and student groups at the local colleges and universities, including UCSB.

Diane Byun: English 
Volunteer Coordinator, SB International Film Festival

Diane Byun is the Volunteer Coordinator of the Santa Barbara International Film Festival. She graduated from UCSB in Spring 2016 with a degree in English (Specialization: Literature & the Mind). When she isn't managing 700 volunteers, Diane focuses on her research assistant duties which include exploring the somatic effects of immigration. Her various interests led to positions in the fields of marketing, law, education, mental health, and entertainment which provided immense opportunity for personal and professional growth. She will be leaving the paradise that is Santa Barbara to begin law school in Fall 2017 to pursue a career in intellectual property.


Ryan Mandell: English
Jr. Account Executive, Surf Media Communications

Ryan Mandell is a journalist, publicist, copywriter, content writer, and magazine contributor. He writes for multiple publications and companies including Concious Lifestyle Magazine, The Santa Barbara Independent, BigSpeak, Sidekick Creative, The Santa Barbara Consciousness Network, and The Millennial Entrepreneur Network. He has interviewed My Morning Jacket, Slightly Stoopid, Cheech Marin, Mike Campbell of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Zella Day and Blitzen Trapper. Ryan is also a budding travel writer, his journey has led him to beautiful places like Indonesia. Most recently, Ryan has transitioned in the world of public relations. He has run successful PR campaigns for the One Love Festival and DEEEP Events, and is currently employed as a Junior Account Executive at Surf Media Communications, which services non-profits such as the YMCA, United Way, and many others.

Melissa Walker: English
Noozhawk & Marketing Consultant, Santa Barbara City College

Melissa Walker is a marketing specialist and journalist with more than 10 years’ experience sharing the message and building the brands for a variety of organizations benefitting the Santa Barbara County community. Melissa works with Santa Barbara City College’s Scheinfeld Center for Entrepreneurship promoting global trade and logistics programs, and has over five years of experience at Noozhawk as the iSociety columnist, contributing writer, photographer and videographer, covering local nonprofits and the education community. She has worked with Laguna Blanca School, Teddy Bear Cancer Foundation, News Channel 3 KEYT, and was appointed to the Santa Barbara County Commission for Women by Santa Barbara County First District Supervisor Salud Carbajal. Melissa began her career working for The Presidio Trust in San Francisco, where she helped create the first sustainable national park while developing a passion for writing with articles for The Presidio Post.

Nancy Hernandez: Feminist Studies
Design Studio Manager, Sonos Inc.

Nancy Hernandez is a Mexican American from the Greater Los Angeles Area. She graduated with a degree in Feminist Studies and a minor in Education and Applied Psychology from UCSB in 2011. Soon after graduation, Nancy began her career as an Events Coordinator at UCSB. After two years in this position, she transitioned to Sonos as a Talent Experience Specialist for the Human Resources Recruiting team. One year later, she was promoted to Design Studio Manager for the Sonos Design team. Joe Sabado: Political Science & Asian American Studies
Executive Director of SIS&T/Associate CIO of UCSB Student Affairs

Joe Sabado is the Associate CIO of Student Affairs and the Executive Director for Student Information Systems & Technology (SIS&T) at UC Santa Barbara. In this role, he oversees a team consisting of marketing/communication specialists, software, web database developers, help desk, as well as network and server administrators to provide information technology and communication services for the Division of Student Affairs. He also volunteers as a staff advisor for the UCSB Chapter of National Society of Leadership and Success, Kapatirang Pilipino, and as a NASPA Undergraduate Fellowship Program (NUFP) mentor. Joe's blog,, which focuses on student affairs and technology leadership has been recognized as one of the Top 50 Must-Read Higher Ed IT Blogs by EdTech magazine for three years. Joe holds a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and Minor in Asian American Studies from UC Santa Barbara and an MBA with Specialization in Information Technology Management from Capella University.

Eric Wilder: Geography

Eric Wilder graduated from UCSB in 2010 with a BA in Geography and an emphasis in Geographic Information Systems. By working as a cartographer in a field *related to his major* for 3 years, Eric learned that his strengths and interests resided in a very different area: higher education! Using dedication and strategic planning, Eric transitioned into the education industry with no related work experience and worked his way up through various internships and jobs at two universities while obtaining his Master's Degree in Counseling and Guidance. Now as a Career Counselor at UCSB, Eric coaches students on how to successfully change direction when post-college life isn’t what you expect.

Erin McGrath: History/Global Studies
Linguistic Director, Ibenta USA

Erin McGrath grew up in the Bay Area and originally entered UCSB with her sights set on a career in diplomacy. After a formative year studying abroad in Spain, Erin switched paths and decided to become an English teacher. A master’s degree and a year in Turkey later, she found herself back in the Bay Area right as the tech boom started. Having always been fascinated by the concept of artificial intelligence, she started working as a computational linguist at Inbenta, a Barcelona-founded company that utilizes natural language processing and AI to deliver search solutions for companies all over the world. Currently, Erin manages the linguistic team in the US office, working closely with a global team of linguists and engineers to develop Inbenta’s technology and improve the search experience for all.



Katelyn Surak: English/Communication
Sr. Manager of Training & Enablement, Appfolio Inc.

Katelyn Surak is originally from Orange County, CA, and graduated from UCSB with a BA in Communication and a minor in English. After graduation, she started her career at a local tech start-up, AppFolio Inc., and has worked there ever since. Katelyn joined AppFolio as a member of the customer service department and later moved up to help manage different customer service teams. She now focuses on customer and internal training programs as the Sr. Manager of Training & Enablement.

In her role as chief philanthropic officer/senior vice president, Jan Campbell is responsible for all donor services including gifts, grants, planned giving, as well as engagement and education. With 35 years of experience in both the commercial and nonprofit sectors, Jan previously held management positions in systems consulting and marketing at Digital Equipment Corporation; Oppenheim, Appel, Dixon & Co.; and Bartlett, Pringle & Wolf, CPAs. She was also the business manager for the Santa Barbara Independent; editor and publisher of the Valley Voice in Goleta; vice president of communications and administration for an Internet startup, WEBALG; development director for Page Youth Center; and administrator for Heal the Ocean. Jan holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from the University of California, Santa Barbara and certificates in accounting and college counseling.


Ty Manning: English
Regional Recruiter, Peace Corps

Raised in Southern California and Southern Oregon, Ty Manning graduated from UCSB in 2009 with a degree in English and a drive to work in social justice. Ty is a Returned Peace Corps Volunteer who served in the rural mountains of northern Peru from 2011 - 2013, working on community health promotion.  After returning from Peru, he continued his career in public service and now works as a recruiter for the Peace Corps. The Peace Corps is a service opportunity for motivated change-makers to immerse themselves in a community abroad, working side-by-side with local leaders to tackle the most pressing challenges of our generation. Ty helps place Americans in communities in developing countries around the world!



Steve Ortiz: Spanish
Vice President, United Way of Santa Barbara County

Steve Ortiz is the incoming President & CEO of United way of Santa Barbara County, effective March 1, 2017. Ortiz is a dedicated 11-year executive of United Way, most recently serving as Executive Vice President & COO. During Ortiz’ tenure with United Way he and his development team have raised over $40 million to create, expand and deliver result-driven, innovative strategic partnerships across multiple sectors for the benefit of the local community.  He has also lead marketing and public relations campaigns and program/partnership branding. Ortiz holds bachelor degrees from the University of California, Santa Barbara and a Masters in Business Administration from Cal Lutheran University. Ortiz was a Pacific Coast Business Times “40 Under 40” Award Recipient in 2010 and also owned a small business and served as managing partner of the LLC.

Darla Bea: History of Art & Architecture
DJ & Radio Personality; Digital Marketing Specialist, Oniracom

Darla Bea has served as the resident DJ at venues like The Goodland Hotel, Canary Rooftop, Four Seasons Biltmore Ty Lounge, Blush Restaurant & Lounge, M8RX Nightclub, The Mercury Lounge & Reds Bin 211 in the Funk Zone plus other popular nightspots. She is the host of the popular two-hour KCSB-FM 91.9 weekly radio show “Rock It Properly”(“Santa Barbara’s School of Rock”). Darla graduated from the University of California at Santa Barbara in 2003 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in the History of Art and Architecture. She went on to get professional certification in graphic design, visual communications, marketing and public relations through the post-grad UCSB Extension Program. In addition to her music career, Darla works for digital marketing agency, Oniracom (founded by UCSB Alum Jacob Tell) heading up project management for musical clientele including Jack Johnson and the Santa Barbara Bowl.


Ginny Brush: Art

Arts Administrator, Santa Barbara County Arts Commission (Retired)

Prior to her work in the public sector as an arts administrator, Ginny Brush spent 15 years as an arts educator in secondary schools, and served as an Artist in Residence for 2 years in the Rhode Island School of Design’s Summer Program. After teaching she spent 15 years in the private sector in the arena of advertising, marketing and design while devoting time to her fine art photography. In 2000, Ms. Brush was hired by the County of Santa Barbara as the Visual Arts Coordinator where she curated exhibitions in the County’s public galleries, and developed and coordinated public art projects for the City of Santa Barbara. She served as Executive Director of the Santa Barbara County Arts Commission from 2006-2015, working closely with regional nonprofits, foundations, and governmental agencies. Ms. Brush was honored as Citizen of the Year in 2009 by Downtown Santa Barbara, and as a Local Hero in 2012 by the Santa Barbara Independent for her arts advocacy efforts. Ms. Brush currently serves on the Boards of the Santa Barbara Arts Collaborative, the Ensemble Theatre Company (ETC), and Downtown Santa Barbara.


Tim O'Neil: Film & Media Studies
Founder & Creative Director, MENTALiTY

Tim O'Neil has created campaigns in the movie and television trailer business for the past 16 years, including Orange is the New Black, Disney•Pixar’s UP, Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland, Iron Man 3, Glee, Sons of Anarchy, Black Swan, and You’re the Worst, as well as political trailers (2012 presidential campaign, 2016 congressional races and local races) and social activism trailers (Ferguson, MO). A graduate of film studies and economics from UCSB in 2001, Tim returned to Santa Barbara in 2013 as founder and creative director of MENTALiTY, a creative advertising agency which specializes in campaigns and branding for television, movies, and worthy causes.



Michael Westmore: Art
Major Hollywood make-up artist

Michael Westmore comes from a long line of Hollywood makeup artists. Throughout his career, he has worked with some of the leading performers in motion pictures and television. He is noted for his work on numerous television series including Star Trek, and Face Off on the SyFy Channel. Having worked with a number of studios, including Paramount Studios and Universal Studios, Michael's makeup work spans dozens of feature films and television series. During his 50+ years in the motion picture industry, he has been associated with such stars as Sylvester "Rocky" Stallone, Farrah Faucet, Robert "Raging Bull" DeNiro, Elizabeth Taylor, and Betty Davis.
