These links represent some of the primary low cost, short-term work programs available to currently enrolled and recent UCSB graduates.
AIESEC (International Association of Students in Economics and Commerce)
Provides a low cost placement service for a paid summer to 18 month internship or traineeship for businesses with some teaching English and tourism placements as well.
Alliances Abroad
Provides paid escapes that allow you to earn money while having the trip of a lifetime. You will be able to immerse yourself in a new country and culture, without worrying about the costs. Available in the following countries: Australia, Chile, China, & England.
Intrax Internships Abroad
Intrax Internships Abroad is a professional development program in which qualified students do international internships with host companies in London, Paris, Barcelona, Madrid, Berlin, and Tokyo. Students who are accepted into the program pay as they would for study abroad and receive a personalized internship match, training, housing, excursions, and have an on-site coordinator. Looking ahead to a challenging job market, international work experience can give participants an edge. Individual job placements are listed by location and by function.
American Scandinavian Foundation
The Nordic countries are among the world's most advanced nations in engineering, computer technology and education. Paid short-term and long-term training positions with private industry and technical universities in chemistry, computer science, forestry, horticulture, engineering are available throughout Nor den (Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden) lasting from 8 to 12 weeks from May to October are available.
BUNAC: Work in Britain, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and more.
The British Universities North America Club (BUNAC) allows participants to experience short-term work in selected countries for up to 6 months any time of the year. Participants find their own jobs and may work in any field, although most find work in the service industry ( retail, restaurants, pubs, etc.). The program is open to U.S. citizens who are full-time students or graduating seniors, provided they begin the program within 6 months after graduation. There is a more limited program also available in Australia for US students granted on a first-come, first serve basis. Program application,fees, types of jobs, and more on-line.
CDS International: Work/Intern in Germany
N.Y. City Phone: (212) 497-3500. Email: info@cdsintl.org. CDS offers training opportunities ranging from 6-18 months in business, engineering and technical fields. The program involves one month of intensive language training in Germany followed by a five month paid internship or a work permit for 12-18 months, depending upon the CDS program utilized. Good knowledge of German language and US Citizenship required. Financial aid available.
CIEE: Council for Work Abroad
Offers go abroad GAP year programs in China, Japan, Chile, the Dominican Republic, France, Spain and Costa Rica Internship Features common to all CIEE go abroad Gap year programs:
- Housing and meals with families
- Language immersion program classes
- English teaching internship or community service
- Arrival Orientation
- Supervision and support throughout your stay
- 24-hr. emergency support
- Trips and excursions to important historical and cultural sites
IAESTE- International Association for the Exchange of Students for Technical Experience
Provides paid, 8-12 week summer international placements primarily for engineer, IT, and other related science areas in over 80 countries around the world. The program deadline is typically early January each year for a low cost fee of around $450 and is paid only if a placement is secured. Airfare is not included. Low cost in country housing accommodations typically provided. There are also specialty area conferences. The organization also places J-1international students in U.S. companies.
IHIPO
Enables candidates to find internships and jobs abroad. As a social network, iHipo offers the ideal opportunity to build an international career network (e.g. with other expatriates) and join country-based communities.
International Cooperative Education
Paid overseas summer work and internships. Low cost fees include housing; work visa and placement. Open to international students and graduating seniors.
Intern in Asia
Help U.S. college students and recent graduates get Internships at American and Asian companies in China and Japan. Complete on-line application to find out if you are eligible.
Interexchange
InterExchange offers a variety of programs (summer and year-long) for both US and non-US citizens. They offer work programs in the Czech Republic, Finland, Germany, Hungary, Norway, and Switzerland and au pair programs in Austria, Finland, France (summer and year), Italy, Netherlands, Norway and Spain.
The Mountbatten Institute
The Mountbatten Institute promotes educational and business links

INTERNATIONAL SCHOOLS SERVICES
Must have bachelor's degree, teaching certification, significant overseas experience (such as student teaching or study abroad), and be willing to go to any country particularly in the developing world for a 2-year contract. Areas in special demand include math, science, computers, library/media specialist, music, and counseling.

VOLUNTEER INTERNATIONAL.ORG
An up-to-date search site for international volunteer and interns opportunities. Find the perfect volunteer opportunity by place, type of work and/or project duration. Answers on the who, what, where, when, why and how of volunteering abroad. Information on web sites, funding, publications and jobs as well as first-hand accounts of volunteer experiences.
PEACECORPS

800-424-8580, x1; The Peace Corps is one of the best-paid "volunteer" jobs: All expenses paid, extensive training, and a "resettlement allowance" approximately $5,400 after completing 2-year assignment. Placements in over 90 countries in Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe, Latin America, the Middle East, the Pacific Basin, and Russia. Positions available in teaching English (except in Latin America), though math and science teachers especially in demand. Jobs in agriculture, business, health, skilled trades, etc., also available. U.S. citizens only. No upper age limit. No application deadline, but allow 9 months between application and placement. 3,200 volunteers are placed annually with plans to expand this to 3,500-4,000.
UNITED NATIONS VOLUNTEER PROGRAM (UNV)
Recruits and places international specialists and field workers in developing countries for two years or less in humanitarian relief, peace-building electoral work or human rights projects. UNV does not offer short-term overseas summer camps or practical assignments for students.
VOLUNTEERS FOR PEACE
Great for combining travel with an international short-term, two to four week teaching and volunteer projects abroad. Search by country for possibilities.

PACIFIC ISLANDS CLUB
This is a full-time, six month contract to be a CLUBMATE on Guam or Saipan for Asian tourists. The contract includes room and board; round-trip airfare; a monthly salary ; and inexpensive medical and dental insurance. This position requires a strong customer service industry background, outgoing, energetic personality with a desire to work hard and gain multi-cultural exposure. Life guarding, CPR, First-Aid, EMT, or wind surfing instruction certificates area all helpful. An ability to speak or learn Japanese, Chinese or Korean is very important.
CAMP COUNSELORS USA
Placements in camp with full room and board and a small, symbolic stipend (not enough to cover program fee). Minimum requirements include experience with children, knowledge of the appropriate foreign language, and teaching/coaching experience.

CONSULTANTS FOR GLOBAL PROGRAMS
We offer study abroad programs, teaching abroad programs, and experiential programs for undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, professionals, and those interested in traveling and learning abroad. Programs range from short-term summer programs to multi-year programs in countries such as Cyprus, China, and South Africa, as well as in the United States.
PARTNERSHIP FOR SERVICE LEARNING
Programs for summer, semester, or year combining academic courses for credit with unpaid service work in human services, health care, special education, TEFL, or community development. Locations in the Czech Republic, Ecuador, England, France, India, Israel, Jamaica, Mexico, the Philippines, Scotland, and South Dakota (with Native Americans). Application deadline: 2 months prior to starting date. $250 application fee (refunded if not accepted and deducted from program fees if accepted). Program fees range from $4,000-7,000.
SEMESTER AT SEA
Besides the semester at sea program from the University of Pittsburgh's College of Arts and Sciences, the Institute for Shipboard Education Sea now offers a summer alternative. Sail from June 14 to August 18, and visit Greece, Spain, Norway, Russia, Belgium, Portugal, Italy, Egypt and Israel and earn nine credits.
NON-UC STUDY ABROAD PROGRAMS WITH INTERNSHIP OPTIONS
