Beyond Graduation: Post-BA Internships & Fellowships

Many programs involve highly competitive situations, and an extensive application process. Begin your research late junior or early senior year.

All Disciplines

Americorps 
AmeriCorps is a network of national service programs that engage more than 50,000 Americans each year in intensive service to meet critical needs in education, public safety, health, and the environment. AmeriCorps members serve through more than 2,100 nonprofits, public agencies, and faith-based organizations. They tutor and mentor youth, build affordable housing, teach computer skills, clean parks and streams, run after-school programs, and help communities respond to disasters. Created in 1993, AmeriCorps is part of the Corporation for National and Community Service, which also oversees Senior Corps and Learn and Serve America. Together these programs engage more than 2 million Americans of all ages and backgrounds in service each year.

Center for California Studies                                                                                                                                      
The Center administers the Jesse M. Unruh Assembly Fellowship, Executive Fellowship, Judicial Administration Fellowship, and California Senate Fellows programs. These programs, known collectively as the Capital Fellows Programs, are nationally recognized. The 18 Assembly Fellows, 18 Senate Fellows, 18 Executive Fellows and 10 Judicial Administration Fellows receive an outstanding opportunity to engage in public service and prepare for future careers, while actively contributing to the development and implementation of public policy in California. The ranks of former fellows and associates include a Justice of the California Supreme Court, members of the United States Congress and the State Legislature, a deputy director of the Peace Corps, corporate executives, and local government and community leaders.
Fellows in each program work for 11 months, receive health benefits and a monthly stipend of $1972 and are considered employees of CSUS. They work as full-time members of a legislative, executive, or judicial branch office, and are typically given assignments with a significant amount of responsibility and challenges. Fellows also enroll as graduate students at CSUS and receive 12 graduate credits from the CSUS Government Department or Public Policy and Administration Program. The enrollment fees are paid by the programs.

Peace Corps
Provides 28 different programs in education, community service, business advisory and development health programs; environmental and urban planning and more. Each year, approximately 3,500 are accepted for 77 different countries. You must be a U.S. citizen. Participants receive a monthly stipend to cover living expenses and $6,075 after the two years of service, plus a reduction in loan deferment. The experience can also be used towards one of 30 different Peace Corps Masters Programs in International Affairs.

Teach for America
Places college graduates as teachers for two years of service in inner city or rural public schools. No formal teaching credential required. However, participants must take 14 units toward teaching credits at a nearby institution (free tuition) during service. Service is considered part of the Americorps program. Applications accepted on a rolling basis until early March with four deadline application periods.

White House Fellowship Program
The program seeks outstanding individuals early in their careers, who have both excelled in what they do and demonstrated a strong commitment to their communities. The participants will serve one year (September to August) as full time paid assistants to senior White House staff. They also join together in an exceptional education program designed to complement their work experiences.

Business, Communications & Other Liberal Arts

American Association for University Women
The AAUW Educational Foundation, one of the largest sources of funding exclusively for graduate women in the world, supports aspiring scholars around the globe, teachers and activists in local communities, women at critical stages of their careers, and those pursuing professions where women are underrepresented. Eligibility criteria and applications for fellowships and grants may be downloaded from this site. The Foundation also makes several prestigious national awards to recognize excellence in achievement.

American Political Science Association
With more than 13,500 members residing in over seventy countries worldwide, the American Political Science Association is the world's largest professional organization for the study of politics. The Association brings together political scientists from all fields of inquiry, regions, and occupational endeavors in order to expand our awareness and understanding of political life.

Andover Teaching Fellowship
At Andover on a teaching fellowship, the recent college graduate (or graduate school degree recipient) is introduced to teaching in a program of guided work in the classroom, professional seminars, and exposure to theories and methods of experienced faculty. The Application asks for a transcript, three letters of recommendation (two from professors in the field in which you are applying) and a one-two page essay addressing: why are you applying? What is your interest in secondary education?

The Carter Center Internship Program
For undergraduates and recent graduates interested in contemporary international and domestic issues.

College Plus One
For recent graduates or graduates seeking a professional internship in the D.C. area. Program includes housing, internship placement, job search help and a professional program administered out of The Washington Center.

Columbia Publishing Course
The Columbia Publishing Course's one hundred students are made up of college graduates from across the United States, South America, Europe and Asia. They are united by a keen love of books, a vigorous approach to learning, a respect for the craft of writing, and a desire to stretch the public's literary imagination. Throughout the six-week program, students simulate magazine and book production processes and participate in a special career fair. The Columbia Publishing Course is neither an apprenticeship nor an internship, but an auspicious immersion into the world of magazine and book publishing.

Coro Southern California--Public Affairs Fellows
The Fellows Program in Public Affairs offers a broad look at the dynamics of pubic policy. Participants will spend nine months experiencing the complexity of relationships and the diversity of institutions that make up the public arena. Coro training combines field assignments in political campaigns, government offices, labor unions, corporations, non-profit organizations and media offices with seminars, interviews, group and individual assignments and special focus weeks.

The Everett Public Internship Service Program
Places almost 200 interns in New York or Washington D.C. in summer public service internships with 52 organizations dedicated to improving the world. Internships provide $200 for weekly expenses. Review program descriptions and application requirements on-line. Apply to those organizations of most interest to you indicating in your cover letter that you are applying for an Everett Public Service Internship. Deadlines vary by agency

Herbert Scoville Jr. Peace Fellowship
This Peace Fellowship was established in 1987 to provide college graduates with the opportunity to gain a Washington perspective on key issues of peace and security. Twice yearly, the Fellowship's Board of Directors selects a group of outstanding individuals to spend six to nine months in Washington. Supported by a monthly stipend, the Fellows serve as full-time project assistants at the participating organization of their choice. In the Program's first seventeen years, ninety-two fellowships have been awarded.

Institute of Humane Studies 
Provides internships, fellowships, and scholarships and free seminars for journalism, production and those dedicated to the expansion of intellectual pursuit and democratization.

The Institute for Women's Policy Research
The Institute for Women's Policy Research (IWPR) is a public policy research organization dedicated to informing and stimulating the debate on public policy issues of critical importance to women and their families. IWPR focuses on issues of poverty and welfare, employment and earnings, work and family issues, the economic and social aspects of health care and domestic violence, and women's civic and political participation.

James Madison Memorial Fellowship
This program seeks applicants committed to a career in teaching American history, American government, or social studies at the secondary level. Junior fellowships are awarded to undergraduates or recent graduates who plan to become teachers and want to attend graduate school full time. Senior Fellowships are awarded to experienced teachers who want to pursue graduate studies through summer and evening classes.

The Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute (CHCI) The CHCI was established in 1978 by members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus as a non-profit, non-partisan educational organization dedicated to developing the next generation of Latino leadersEvery year, the nine-month Fellowship Program (late August to late May) offers 20 talented Latinos from across the country the opportunity to gain hands-on experience at the national level in the public policy area of their choice. Fellows have the opportunity to work in such areas as international affairs, economic development, education policy, housing, or local government. Participants receive domestic round-trip transportation to Washington, DC; Health insurance ; and a gross monthly stipend of $2,200 to help cover housing and local expenses. Deadlines are mid-February.

Library of Congress Fellowships
Offers volunteer internships to post-graduate students who are seeking experience in a public policy research organization.

Mellon Fellowships in Humanistic Studies
The primary objectives for the Fellowships are to attract exceptionally promising students to prepare for careers of teaching and scholarship in humanistic studies by providing top-level, competitive, portable awards, and to contribute thereby to the continuity of teaching and research of the highest order in America’s colleges and universities. Fellowships are for the first year of graduate school only and fellows should plan to seek support elsewhere for subsequent years. Winners of Mellon Fellowships may take their awards to any accredited graduate school of Arts and Sciences in the United States and Canada. Each candidate is expected to apply to graduate school. The stipend for Mellon Fellows entering graduate school will be $17,500 plus tuition and mandated fees. Application deadline is in December

The Mountbatten Institute
Provides graduates and young professionals the opportunity to gain practical and theoretical business training and experience, whilst also developing social and cultural awareness and understanding. Provides an internship year in New York or London with an option of the MBA degree in International Business Practice.

Math, Science & Engineering

AT&T Labs                                                 
As part of a long-standing commitment to higher education in science and technology, AT&T Labs offers two programs to graduate students: summer internships and three-year (ALFP) fellowships.

Cornell Tri Institutional MD-Ph.D.
The Tri Institutional Md-Ph.D. Program is training physician-scientists who will become the next generation of leaders in biomedical research. Weill Medical College of Cornell University, The Rockefeller University, and the Sloan-Kettering Institute combine to form one of the few inter-institutional collaborations dedicated to join MD and Ph.D. training. The eminent clinical and research faculties of the three institutions provide a stimulating environment for both basic research and medical training. With over 270 participating faculty members and an organization that fosters student freedom and independence, the program offers unparalleled opportunities for individualized research training.

GEM--M.S/Ph.D. Fellowship Program
GEM's fellowship programs span the entire recruitment, retention, and professional development spectrum. GEM's principal activity is the provision of graduate fellowships at the MS and Ph.D. levels coupled with paid summer internships.

Joan and Sanford I. Weill Graduate School of Medical Sciences of Cornell University ACCESS
The Weill Graduate School of Medial Sciences of Cornell University has established an internship program for training under-served college students in the biomedical sciences. Interns are given hands-on experience in a biomedical research laboratory and are encouraged to apply to Ph.D. programs. Selected students are placed in laboratories at the Weill Medical College under the mentorship of an experienced faculty member. In addition to the laboratory experience, students attend lectures and discussions aimed at enhancing their understanding of the current status of biomedical research, the pathways available to enter a research career, and the range of career opportunities available. Students also participate in weekly journal clubs, attend workshops that teach them how to prepare for interviews and seminars, as well as taking part in various social activities.

Lincoln Laboratory Summer Research Opportunity
Since 1975, Lincoln Laboratory has offered undergraduate and graduate students the unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a leading-edge research environment.  Program participants will contribute to projects and gain experience that complements their courses of study. Opportunities exist in fields such as communications systems, sensor and radar data analysis, digital signal processing, laser and electro-optical systems, solid-state electronics, software engineering, and scientific programming.

Los Alamos National Laboratory (Graduate Research Assistant Program)
The Graduate Research Assistant (GRA) Program is a year-round educational program that provides students with relevant research experience while they are pursuing a graduate degree. In some cases, students can arrange to conduct master's or doctoral thesis research at the Laboratory.

National Internships, Fellowships & Scholarships
Provides links for national research internships in government, private industry, non-profit organizations as well as science-related fellowships and scholarships. This is an amazing list for those pursuing additional research experience after graduation

National Physical Consortium
The NPSC offers a unique and exciting doctoral graduate fellowship program in the Physical Sciences and related Engineering fields. The program is open to all eligible students, with special emphasis toward the recruitment of underrepresented minority and female physical science and engineering students in order to offset the historic imbalance faced by these underrepresented groups within the research community. There are no applicant fees for the student to apply for a NPSC fellowship.

National Science Foundation/Graduate Research (NSF Fellowship Program)
The National Science Foundation (NSF) Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) is the country’s oldest graduate fellowship program that directly supports graduate students in various STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) fields.

Scoville Fellowship for College Graduates
The SEP encourages undergraduates to consider health management and policy as an attractive career option through which they can address health disparities by familiarizing them with the field through a structured summer work experience. Each placement is designed to offer a stimulating opportunity for awareness, learning and growth. The ultimate goal is to increase participation of students committed to eliminating health disparities in this important and exciting field. This program provides college graduates the opportunity to work in Washington, DC, with a public-interest organization focusing on arms control and international security issues. The fellowship is offered twice yearly, in the spring and fall. It lasts from six to nine months and provides a stipend, health insurance, and travel costs to Washington. The Scoville Fellowship does not award grant or scholarship money to students. Scoville Fellows may undertake a variety of activities, including research, writing, and organizing in support of the goals of their host organization and may attend coalition meetings, policy briefings, and Congressional hearings.

Switzer Foundation - Fellowship for Environmental Studies
The goal of the Switzer Environmental Fellowship Program is to support highly talented graduate students in New England and California whose studies are directed toward improving environmental quality and who demonstrate the potential for leadership in their field.

University of Southern California Post Baccalaureate Premedical Program (PPP)
The Postbaccalaureate Premedical Program enables students to complete the science and mathematics core requirements for medical school admission in a supportive environment. It is directed towards students with demonstrated academic achievement in their baccalaureate work, but with little or no prior college-level science and mathematics in their background. Postbaccalaureate premedical students often develop an interest in medical school either after graduation, or too late in their baccalaureate studies for completion of the admission requirements for medical school before graduation.
